The Elric brothers have succeeded in their goal to return Alphonse's body. However, in exchange for Al's body, Ed had to give away his Gate of Truth, taking away his ability to preform alchemy. After a few years of being home with Winry, the Elric brothers decide to head off on another epic journey to the corners of the earth, to find out what they can about the secrets and forms of alchemy. Al heads to the east, toward Xing, and Ed toward the west.

Succeeding in returning Al's body, the Elric brothers take a long rest at home with childhood friend Winry. After a well deserved rest, the two Elric brothers head off in different directions to find out all they can about alchemy and its many forms and secrets. Al heads to the east, and Ed to the west. The story begins with Ed, as he writes in a journal that he has kept about his journey east. Ed soon finds himself in the country of Tuatha, a strange country to the far east of Amestris. Hearing about a strange form of alchemy called Arcanestry, vastly different from Amestrian alchemy, Ed tries to learn its secrets, and continues on into Tuatha, where he soon finds himself caught in the mystery of Arcanestry and a man known as The Fantasy Alchemist.
